Reports show that every one out of four organizations rank enterprise integration among the top 5 business priorities over the next two years. More than 80 percent of organizations have already completed or are in the process of completing different enterprise integration projects. But what exactly is enterprise integration?

Suppose a company is a large house with multiple departments and rooms. Enterprise integration or system integration acts as the building hallways and doors, connecting all the different rooms and enabling a smooth flow of information.

The biggest challenge posed by enterprise integration is the complexity of multiple interconnected networks that make up the system integration platforms. So, let’s break down the key components of an EI system. 

  1. Integrating data involves connecting diverse data sources and, in turn, ensuring data consistency and accuracy in real time across the entire organization. 
  2. Application integration: Data from 2021 shows that, on average, companies use 190 enterprise cloud-based software applications. In 2022, large organizations had an average of 187 applications, and the number has greatly grown since. EI integrates different applications to allow easier information transfer and keep the applications working together. 
  3. Integrating processes: Integrating business processes automates tasks while reducing manual labor and streamlining the overall business processes. 
  4. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): This design model fosters the development of easy-to-use reusable services

The promise of a seamless system allowing companies to navigate all their data in real-time while managing all their applications simultaneously does sound appealing. However, there are some challenges that organizations must be aware of to avoid unwanted financial losses and time losses. 

  1. Most organizations have a high volume of data scattered across multiple departments and systems, making it difficult to access and analyze. These data silos may carry data in different formats and structures, making integration complex. Additionally, long-standing data records often carry inconsistencies that can greatly hinder integration efforts, leading to inaccurate results.  
  2. Not all IT teams have the specialized skills and resources to successfully carry out in-house integration projects. Integration projects can also be time-consuming and resource-intensive, requiring resources and attention away from other critical tasks. Consequently, in-house integration projects put a strain on the already overworked IT experts and resources.
  3. We have already mentioned how integration projects are often complex and involve technical challenges that require careful planning and execution. Each EI must be specifically tailored to meet each organization’s business needs. Testing must then be carried out to ensure everything runs smoothly. This time-intensive process of developing and implementing EI can sometimes also lead to long downtime. 
  4. Integrating systems can expose sensitive data to potential security risks. To control the threat of security breaches, organizations must comply with various data privacy and security regulations, which proves difficult in complex integration environments. Once an EI is set up, managing access to integrated systems also proves complex.  
  5. The system integrations a company undergo must be scalable and bidirectional to allow sustainable growth. Data should flow in both directions between systems to allow real-time updates. Integration must be able to accommodate future changes and technological advancements while also handling increasing workloads without compromising performance.
